Hachette Book Group has officially announced the hiring of Joe Mangan as evp and chief operating officer, starting February 3, filling the position vacated earlier in the year when Ken Michaels moved to Macmillan Science. HGB ceo Michael Pietsch says in the announcement: “Joe’s reputation is one of the best in our industry, and his skills, trade publishing experience, and leadership style are a perfect match for HBG. With his deep expertise in IT and vision for our digital future, his wealth of experience building distribution businesses, and his insight into strategic business development, Joe will be a tremendous asset for us.”
Mangan is currently coo at Perseus Books Group, where he has worked since 2004, and “an orderly transition” has been underway until Mangan departs on January 31. CFO Charles Gallagher will be promoted to chief operating offer for Perseus on January 1, and will continue his cfo duties as well “while we evaluate what additional financial and operational resources would best move the company forward.”
Perseus ceo David Steinberger writes to employees of Mangan, “We deeply appreciate the work he has done here and fully support him as he moves forward to this next stage in his professional life.” As of Janaury 15, all four distribution group presidents will report directly to Steinberger, and director of corporate strategy & business development Scott Edinburgh will report to chief marketing officer Rick Joyce.
