Former Bertelsmann ceo Thomas Middelhoff is leaving the board of the New York Times Company, where he has served as a director since 2003. Bookselling: New Stores In the US, As UK Indie Store Count Falls Below 1,000
The ABA has published their annual list of new member bookstores, listing 44 stores that opened in 2013 (and, as a bonus, 4 more stores that have opened in 2014). Six were new outlets for existing ABA member businesses. Additionally, 12 existing ABA bookstores found new owners during the year — including The Book Stall at Chestnut Court in Winnetka, IL; Inkwood Books in Tampa, FL; Porter Square Books in Cambridge, MA; and Quail Ridge Books & Music in Raleigh, NC. Literary agent Ali Gunn of Gunn Media died in Switzerland of a brain hemorrhage, the Bookseller reports. They say she was found dead Thursday morning. One of her former colleagues at Curtis Brown UK Jonny Geller tells the magazine, “My colleagues are devastated because she was such a life force. She always had a glass of wine and a smile. She was full of color and devoted to her authors. Service provider CodeMantra has been acquired by a group of Boston-based investors “with plans to support the company’s growth and expansion,” and the company will relocate its headquarters to Boston. The sale follows the death of one of the three co-founders, Suresh R. Chakravarthy (CR), at the end of 2012.
