Sales dipped at Scholastic in their fiscal third quarter, ending February 28, dropping $5 million to $373.5 million. Their seasonal net loss of $12.1 million was an improvement over the $20.1 million loss a year ago, though “solely the result of a favorable settlement of outstanding federal tax audits which resulted in a one-time tax benefit of $13.8 million.” The loss on continuing operations grew to $41 million (compared to $31.5 million a year ago.) Penguin Random House India announced new publishing, sales and marketing leadership appointments and a cross-company organizational structure, effective April 1. Penguin India publisher Chiki Sarkar will become publisher of Penguin Random House India, reporting to Penguin Random House India CEO Gaurav Shrinagesh. Penguin Random House Acquires Santillana Trade Publishing
Though the story was denied when it first circulated in April 2013, Penguin Random House has now officially acquired the Santillana trade book business from Spain’s challenged Prisa Group. Santillana Ediciones operates in Spain, Portugal, and Latin America, including Brazil. Santillana says in their announcement that the purchase price was 72 million euros. Penguin Random House declined to comment on Santillana’s account.
