Hachette Australia ceo and chairman of Hachette New Zealand Matt Richell, 40, was killed in a surfing accident in Sydney earlier Wednesday, the Sydney Morning Herald reported. In a statement Hachette UK ceo Tim Hely Hutchinson said: “With great sorrow, and in shock, we have to announce the death of our beloved friend and colleague. Our thoughts and most heartfelt condolences are with Matt’s wife Hannah, his family, his colleagues and many friends in publishing and more widely.”

Crown announced a number of recent promotions in the editorial department. Kevin Doughten has been promoted to senior editor for both the Crown and Archetype imprints, while Domenica Alioto moves up to editor. Miriam Chotiner-Gardiner, as previously announced, has been promoted to associate editor, while Nathan Roberson, Emma Berry, and Nora Evans-Reitz all move up to assistant editor.

At HarperCollins 360, Victoria Commella has been promoted to publicity director.

This year’s Frankfurt Fellows list has been announced, and the 16-person group includes Erica Finkel at Amulet Books from the US, Fiz Osborne at Bloomsbury UK Children’s Books, and Zoe Walton at Penguin Random House Australia Children’s.

Correcting yesterday’s item about Freeman’s, Grove Atlantic no longer distributes Granta, the magazine.
