People, Etc.

Tara Singh Carlson will formally move over to Putnam as senior editor. She will acquire hardcover titles for the Putnam list, while continuing to acquire trade paperback originals for Penguin, which will “predominantly” issue the paperbacks of her Putnam hardcovers as well.

Joan Didion is the subject of a documentary film in progress, “We Tell Ourselves Stories in Order to Live,” co-directed by her nephew Griffin Dunne and Susanne Rostock. After shooting more than 60 hours of footage — largely with Didion — Dunne and Rostock’s company Rava Films has launched a Kickstarter campaign seeking a minimum of $80,000 in funding for interviews of other key figures such as Vanessa Redgrave, Graydon Carter, Cameron Crowe and, according to their posted list, Michiko Kakutani. Notably, the campaign includes a six-minute sample video that’s well worth watching. Rewards for donations include a pair of Joan’s personal sunglasses, a visit on set, a Didion-original recipe book (handwritten by her), and an opportunity for readers to write a letter to Joan with the promise that the letter will be read aloud to her by a loved one. The campaign will run through November 21.

JK Rowling has put an end to a variety of erroneous reports about her next book, via Twitter. She writes: “There’s a story in today’s Mail that I was in a London bar on Monday ‘celebrating’ handing in a ‘romantic novel’ to my publishers… 1) I haven’t handed in ANY kind of novel to my publishers.  I’m only half way through my current book. 2) It isn’t a ‘romantic’ novel. And 3) (brace yourselves) I sometimes have a drink even when I haven’t finished a book.  Yes, that’s how rock and roll I really am.”

Consortium will begin distributing Deep Vellum Publishing on November 1, 2014, and Alternative Comics, Cicada Books, and Postcart Editions on January 1, 2015.

The Califa Library Group has added Kensington to its roster of publishers who provide ebooks directly to its digital platform, the enki library.

Upon further information from the company, note that we have moved Macmillan’s purchase of Cookstr over to the “acquired opportunistically” column.
