Judith Regan’s start-up publishing line Regan Arts (backed by Phaidon Global), has not formally announced their publishing list — but with a steady trickle of pre-publication announcements-as-deals coming in, we took a closer look. After issuing one title last fall (a Virtual Reality Beginner’s Guide, with Google Cardboard inspired VR viewer), the line starts publishing in earnest shortly. Pearson Sees Profit Rising in 2015; WH Smith High Street Sales Continue Falling
In a short trading update, Pearson told investors that 2014 results should be in line with their previous guidance, yielding earnings per share of approximately £720m (of 66 pence a share). Their preliminary forecast for 2015 has earnings rising to between 75 and 80 pence per share. Vook co-founder Matt Cavnar has joined Broadway Video Ventures as general manager. Steve Quinn joins the Perseus Books Group in the newly formed position of assistant director, specialty retail sales on January 26. Previously he was specialty sales manager at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. Quinn will report to senior director, gift sales Eric Green out of Perseus’ Boston office. KU Payouts Increase Again
The monthly pool of money allocated retroactively to self-published authors whose work is offered through Amazon’s Kindle Unlimited subscription plan rose again for December — both in the closely-watched per book payout, which was $1.43 per borrow/read, and in overall dollars, with Amazon allocating a $4.25 million “bonus,” making the total pool for the month $7.25 million. Per book payments hit a low for the year of $1.33 in October, then rose to $1.39 in November. The December unit fee is still lower than the August and September payouts. Barnes & Noble Retail CEO Mitch Klipper To Retire (But Stay On As Real Estate Advisor)
Barnes & Noble’s chief executive for the retail group, Mitchell Klipper, will retire from his role on May 2 (the end of BN’s 2015 fiscal year) after more than 28 years with the company, though he will stay on with the company as special advisor on real estate and other matters through May 3, 2019, at an annual base salary of $400,000. A search for Klipper’s successor is underway, and he will have a hand in the selection process.
