Another Found Manuscript: Dr. Seuss’s What Pet Should I Get?

February 18, 2015By Michael Cader

In the fall of 2013 the late Ted Geisel’s widow Audrey and the author’s longtime secretary and friend Claudia Prescott rediscovered an original unpublished manuscript and sketches — along with other materials — first found shortly after Ted’s death in 1991, while cleaning his office space. Random House Children’s will publish the rediscovered WHAT PET SHOULD I GET? on July 28. And the publisher says in their announcement that “at least two more books will be published from the materials discovered, with titles and publication dates to be announced.” Called “nearly complete” as found, believed to be written “somewhere between 1958 and 1962,” the […]

People, Etc.

February 18, 2015By Sarah Weinman

Well-known sales rep and founder of  Heinecken and Associates in 1978 Ted Heinecken will retire on February 28 from Fujii Associates (which acquired his firm in 2008). Heinecken began his bookselling career over 50 years ago, selling Oxford University Press titles in the Midwest in 1963. Workman Publishing president Carolan Workman comments, “Ted Heineken and Peter Workman grew up in publishing together and enjoyed a relationship filled with enormous respect and affection…. We will miss Ted’s wisdom and professional savvy; his astute – and rarely withheld – opinions; his extraordinary sales ability; and his dedication, loyalty and friendship, but, not his cigar.” Heinecken adds, “I have always held the […]

Sterling to Move Distribution to Donnelley

February 17, 2015By Michael Cader

RR Donnelley announced Tuesday in what looks like a standard press release a multi-year agreement to provide warehousing, distribution and book fulfillment services to Sterling Publishing, with no indication of when that agreement begins. The significant news is not in the announcement: Sterling has run its own warehouse and distribution services up until now, so presumably their longstanding distribution center in Edison, NJ will be vacated, and current Sterling warehouse and distribution jobs are likely on the line. Sterling leases approximately 230,000 square feet of distribution center capacity at their New Jersey facility, and the publisher had continued to run their own distribution, […]

Apple Set to Challenge Special Monitor’s Role to Appeals Court Next Month

February 17, 2015By Sarah Weinman

While we’re waiting for the Second Circuit of Appeals’ ruling on Apple’s appeal of the verdict finding them guilty of antitrust violations in launching their ebookstore — not expected for months — a related appeal will go before the court next month. Apple is continuing to challenge the appointment of special monitor Michael Bromwich, who oversees Apple’s compliance with the antitrust verdict, calling it illegal and unconstitutional. The WSJ remains squarely in favor of Apple’s efforts, with an extensive report identifying “new reasons for the Second Circuit to sack Mr. Bromwich and end what is a major abuse even by the standards of […]
