Benjamin Lee will join Putnam and Dutton as vp, associate publisher of paperbacks, as both imprints will launch their own in-house paperback lines beginning January 2016. Lee was previously vp, associate publisher at Atria.

At St. Martin’s, Monique Patterson has been promoted to editorial director of romance while also continuing as executive editor. She will continue to acquire women’s fiction, literary fiction and commercial nonfiction for all parts of St. Martin’s list (hardcover, trade, mass market and ebook) and will continue to strengthen SMP’s African American fiction and nonfiction program as well.

Former White House Press Secretary and political analyst for CNN Jay Carney will join Amazon on Monday as svp, worldwide corporate affairs, reporting to ceo Jeff Bezos and working out of the company’s Seattle and DC offices. Both Paul Misener, who runs Amazon’s lobbying arm, and Craig Berman, the company’s head of pr, will report to Carney.

At the Jill Corcoran Literary Agency, Eve Porinchak has been promoted to junior agent.

Edward St. Aubyn will write a retelling of King Lear for the Hogarth Shakespeare series, the eighth author to join the program retelling classic Shakespeare plays.

Author Barbara Bickmore died on February 23  in Anacortes, WA. Author of ten novels starting with EAST OF THE SUN in 1988, she was published in 22 countries and was a bestseller in Scandinavia and Germany.
