With First Full Penguin Random House Annual Results, Dohle Says “We Are Stronger Together”
Bertelsmann reported financial results for 2014 on Tuesday morning, providing the first look at a full year’s worth of performance for the merged Penguin Random House. (A year ago, the 2013 report incorporated only six months worth of Penguin’s sales.) The trade publishing giant had combined sales of €3.324 billion for the year, including Random House Germany, which is still owned entirely by Bertelsmann outside of the PRH joint venture. A “Strong Holiday” Puts Books-a-Million In the Black for the Year
Books-a-Million reported fourth quarter sales after the close of the market on Monday, with sales rising 1.8 percent (or $3 million) to $161 million and net income jumping by 63 percent, up to $18.9 million, for the period ending January 31. The modest sales gain helped BAMM grow slightly for the year, with sales of $474 million rising $3.7 million from a year ago. More importantly, the growth in fourth quarter profits left the bookseller with net income from continuing operations of $2.9 million for the fiscal year, compared to a net loss of $8.4 million the year before. Weeks after officially seeking class certification in a lawsuit against Author Solutions in New York Federal Court, the firm of Giskin Soloratoff Anderson & Stewart filed a similar suit last week in a Federal Court in Indiana — where ASI’s main offices are located — on behalf of two new plaintiffs, Patricia Wheeler and Helen Heightsman Gordon, also seeking class action status.
