Picador USA associate editor PJ Horoszko, 27, died unexpectedly March 2 in Brooklyn. Stephen Morrison, Picador Publisher, said in a statement: “PJ was a wonderful young editor on the rise with a keen eye, boundless curiosity, and fierce advocacy on behalf of his authors. He was also an absolute pleasure to work with. PJ is going to be deeply missed by all of us at Picador and our thoughts and prayers are with his family.” In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Newtown Youth & Family Services, 15 Berkshire Road, Sandy Hook CT 06482.

Scholastic announced a number of recent new hires and promotions. Doan Buu has joined the art department as designer, Cartwheel Books and Orchard Books. Most recently, he was a set graphic designer at the Rachel Ray Show. Lizzy Doyle has joined Klutz as associate art director. She was most recently with Parragon. Keith Fretz has been promoted to product manager, multiplatform publishing. Savannah Kuper has been promoted to associate editor. Saraciea Fennell has been promoted to publicist, while Brooke Shearouse moves up to publicity coordinator. Emily Heddleson has been promoted to senior marketing Manager, educational and library marketing, and Antonio Gonzalez moves up to senior marketing manager, brand marketing. Finally, Elizabeth Tiffany has been promoted to production editor, while Catherine Weening has joined as production editor after working as an intern with Scholastic.

In a reorganization of Viking Children’s Books, senior editor Sharyn November‘s position has been eliminated. She joined the company in 1990 as associate editor for Puffin Books; in addition to her positions at Puffin and Viking, she was editorial director of the Firebird imprint. Del Commune Enterprises has been appointed the US scout for HarperCollins Holland.

Awards
The Story Prize was given to Adam Johnson for his National Book Award-winning collection Fortune Smiles.
