Ann Patchett’s new novel Commonwealth is the No. 1 pick on the ABA’s September Indie Next List. Also on the list are Amor Towles’ A Gentleman in Moscow; Little Nothing by Marisa Silver;  Nathan Hill’s The Nix; Mischling by Affinity Konar; and The Gentleman by Forrest Leo — all six of which, including the Patchett, are featured as lengthy pre-publication excerpts that you can read right now in Buzz Books 2016: Fall/Winter. HMH Reduces Full Year Guidance, Though Trade Has Modest Gain

Houghton Mifflin Harcourt reported second quarter sales on Thursday morning, reducing its guidance for the full year on “an updated expectation for its core domestic education market”: 2016 sales are now expected to range from $1.485 billion to $1.555 million (with net billings of between $1.525 billion and $1.595 billion). The small trade division had a reasonable quarter, with sales rising $1.2 million to $38.7 million, attributed to “frontlist culinary titles such as The Whole 30 , Weber’s New American Barbecue , Meathead and Ted Talks.” That was offset by “a decline in net sales of ebooks attributed to fewer movie tie-ins of bestselling ebook titles coupled […]

Clinton Campaign Book from S&S In September

Hillary Clinton’s longtime publisher Simon & Schuster will publish the official Clinton-Kaine campaign book, Stronger Together, on September 6. With introductions by Clinton and Kaine, the publisher says, “The book will explore the solutions she has laid out from the beginning of her presidential campaign in April 2015, up to and including her appearance at the Democratic National Convention on July 28.”

Hannah Fergesen has joined KT Literary as an agent, representing speculative adult, young adult, and middle grade fiction. Fergesen was most recently a literary assistant at Trident Media Group. Briefs: Pocket Constitution Sales Rise After Khan Speech; A Local Line for S&S India; and More

Khizr Khan’s speech at the Democratic National Convention has boosted distribution of the US Constitution. A $1 Pocket Constitution published by The National Center for Constitutional Studies — similar to the one Khan displayed during his speech, but not the same edition — moved 45,000 copies on Amazon between Saturday morning and Monday night, spokesperson Dan Sheridan told the WSJ. After announcing they would give free copies of their pocket Constitution until Election Day, the American Civil Liberties Union says it has received approximately 80,000 orders.
