At Putnam, Ashley Hewlett has been promoted to publicity manager, while Elena Hershey moves up to senior publicist.

Melissa Ceraso has been named editor in mathematics and the natural sciences, and Jason Simon has been hired as senior web developer for Choice, the reviews publication from the Association of College and Research Libraries.

At Glitterati Incorporated, Conor Romack has been promoted to sales & projects manager.

In the UK, Simon Thorogood will move to Canongate from Headline as editorial director at the end of August, and Hannah Knowles will join the publisher as senior commissioning editor in November (she is currently at Octopus).

Weston Woods Studios founder Morton Schindel, 98, died August 20. He developed a special filming technique to “faithfully transfer the artwork of children’s picture books from page to screen,” and produced more than 300 motion pictures and 450 recordings. Scholastic purchased Weston Woods Studios in 1996, and most recently Schindel was chairman of the Weston Woods Institute and founder of Mediamobiles, a company that developed mobile multimedia learning environments. Scholastic chairman, president and ceo Richard Robinson said in the announcement: “Mort Schindel not only founded the art form and business of creating films based on outstanding children’s books, he also helped generations of teachers and librarians understand how they could reach more children with these great stories through the medium of film, video and television.”
