Eric Lupfer is joining Fletcher & Company as an agent, moving over from William Morris Endeavor, where he has been for fourteen years. Lupfer specializes in non-fiction ranging from history, science, and economics, to narrative journalism and current affairs.

At Trident Media Group, Alexa Stark has been promoted to literary agent, focusing primarily on literary fiction, upmarket commercial fiction, and narrative nonfiction.

Mary Austin Speaker joins Milkweed Editions as art director on January 17.

Franco Alvarado is leaving FW Media, where he was senior technical production specialist for three years, to launch Franco Alvarado Consulting, providing ebook development and QA, print book design, and editorial services.

At the University of Chicago Press, Karen Merikangas Darling has been promoted to executive editor for science studies; Tim Mennel moves up to executive editor for American history, urban studies, and regional titles; Priya Nelson is now editor for anthropology and history; and Mary Laur becomes senior editor for reference and writing guides.

Chuck Myers has joined the press as senior editor for law and political science (he was at Princeton University Press and University of Kansas Press) and Jane Macdonald has been hired as editor for economics, business, and finance (she was at MIT Press).

Jana Maria Hartmann Scouting has added Dutch publisher Nieuw Amsterdam as a client.

Obituaries
Longtime owner of Dutton’s Books Dave Dutton, 79, died Friday from complications of Parkinson’s Disease. Dutton’s was founded by his parents in 1961 and Dutton took over ownership of the store in the mid-1970s through its closing in 2006.

Kevin Starr, 76, historian and author of numerous books on California history, died Saturday of a heart attack in San Francisco.

William Peter Blatty, 89, author of the novel The Exorcist and other works, died Thursday at a hospital in Bethesda, MD of multiple myeloma.
