Amazon Plans Fourteenth Books Store

September 25, 2017By Michael Cader

Not officially announced yet, we can tell you that Amazon is moving into a new state with their fourteenth known bookstore location: On Friday, the company posted a job listing for a store manager (“Must love books and devices!”) in Austin, TX. The location is the new upscale Simon mall development The Domain, in Northwest Austin, being promoted as an alternative to downtown. (N.B: Amazon later corrected their listing to The Domain NORTHSIDE — which is an adjacent mall.) Amazon has expanding corporate offices in the area, which also includes a Whole Foods, and  the research campus of the University […]

Dangerous Books Announces A Second Title

September 25, 2017By Michael Cader

Milo Yiannopoulos continues to undercut some of the arguments made in his lawsuit against Simon & Schuster with his own business activities. The company he created to publish his own book after it was rejected by S&S has announced a second title, Fatwa: Hunted in America, by Pamela Geller. In doing so, he reaffirms his lack of competence as a publisher, since the title is due November 1 — so much for sell in to stores — and, like the first announcement of Milo’s own book, it’s currently available for pre-order from Amazon alone, and even there can only be pre-ordered in […]

France’s La Martiniere and Media-Participations In Merger Talks

September 21, 2017By Michael Cader

French book publisher La Martiniere Group (which also owns Abrams in the US) and French media company Media-Participations (which specializes in comics and graphic novels, but also publishes magazines, has a film/tv production arm, and a digital media group focused on videogames) announced Thursday that they are in merger discussions. Both companies are privately owned. Herve de La Martiniere said in a statement, “We are considering our options for a closer connection between our two groups, in the form of an exchange of shares. I need to think about the future of the house I founded 25 years ago.” He added, “Getting […]

Scholastic Returns to Normal Sales, with Higher Loss

September 21, 2017By Michael Cader

Scholastic reported fiscal first quarter sales through August 31, returning to a normal quarter after last year’s boost from the release of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. Sales were $189 million — down from $283 million a year ago, but close to the $191 million in the same quarter two years ago. The company traditionally has a seasonal loss in the first quarter while school is out of session, though this time losses were heavier at $102 million — compared to $62.5 million last year, and $79.5 million the year before that. But the analyst still covering the stock […]
