Bookselling: Store News, S&S New Store Offer, Bertram’s for Sale

October 26, 2017
By Michael Cader

The manager of the Barnes & Noble in Maui Cindy Mauricio told employees and the media that the store will not be closing at the end of the year after all, based on a conversation with her district manager. A spokesperson for the mall owner did not have any confirmation yet, and the management company says for now that originally it was BN that declined to renew the lease rather than the inverse, as first report.

The Bookworm in Carbondale, IL is up for sale as owners Carl Rexroad and Kelly Rexroad prepare to retire after more than 16 years in business. “If buyers are not found by early 2018, the Rexroads will begin to liquidate the inventory and close the store.”

Simon & Schuster announced a new offer for independent booksellers opening new stores. They will provide special discounts, dating and co-op terms for new indie store accounts and stores opening new locations. Details are available through  field sales director Tracy Nelson.

The business unit that includes UK wholesaler Bertram’s, academic library supplier Dawson Books, and online worldwide bookseller Wordery is up for sale. That decision was announced as parent company The Connect Group reported annual results through August.

They say the board “resolved to divest the books division” after “a strategic review, which determined the business was no longer core to the group’s future direction.” They “aim to find a buyer….within 12 months.”

In the meantime, the carrying value of the books division “written down to a fair value less cost to sell of £15 million.” They took charges for amortization and impairment of acquired intangibles charges of £11.2 million.
