UK Print Units Decline In 2017

Because of the holiday Bookscan will not release their US sales statistics for the final week of 2017 until Thursday, but in the UK the final report shows a mixed view of a basically flat year. While the headline says the print market grew, the measure of book consumption says the opposite: Print book sales were 189.8 million units, down 2.6 percent from 195 million units in 2016. (And ebook sales were likely down as well.) What grew is the measure of the bookselling economy — sales generated at retail (which Bookscan captures in the UK, but not in the US). […]

The Guardian acquired a copy of Michael Wolff‘s embargoed FIRE AND FURY: Inside the Trump White House from a New England bookseller in advance of the January 9 publication date. Their report will garner attention, at the same time that it will leave some wondering how deep the book’s revelations go, given the few quotes highlighted in the article. Sue Grafton, 77, author of the Kinsey Millhone series, died of cancer at her home in Santa Barbara on December 28. The alphabetical series began with A is for Alibi in 1982 and continued through her last book, Y Is for Yesterday, published in August 2016. She had not yet begun writing the final book of the series, which was to be titled Z Is for Zero and published August 2019.
