Ten Speed Press will replace copies of British-Israeli chef Yotam Ottolenghi’s newest cookbook SWEET in April after the discovery of errors affecting 21 of 115 recipes. As first reported by the Toronto Star, “seven corrections involve ingredient amounts or typos,” with another 14 errors due to incorrect temperature conversions. In addition, a recipe for a Butternut, Honey and Almond Tin Cake was accidentally labelled nut-free. Ten Speed Press spokesperson David Hawk told the Star that “temperatures were rounded off…when the recipes were being tested for the North American audience,” leading to errors. As a result, Hawk said in a statement […]

Corporate: Pearson Celebrates the Mediocre, UMB and Informa Try Again
Despite Pearson’s recent string of disappointing results, which have wiped out half of the company’s market value over the past two and half years, their official releases maintain an orderly calm, using various comparison stats to make their world seem stable. The newest trading update fits squarely in that genre; they expect that full-year earnings will be at the higher end of their very modest guidance — if only the dollar had not dropped in value against the pound, so actual profit is below that guidance (but it’s not their fault). People, Etc.
Alex W. Meriwether will be promoted to general manager of the Harvard Book Store as of March 1. He has worked there since 2004, most recently as marketing manager, and takes over from Carole Horne, who has been with the store for 43 years. Horne will continue working on a part-time basis, serving in the buying group and as a senior advisor to management. Co-owner Jeff Mayersohn says in the announcement, “We are thrilled about Alex’s taking the General Manager position at a time when there is a resurgence in independent brick-and-mortar bookselling. He has done an extraordinary job in […]
Createspace to Exit Services Business, Will Lay Off 58
South Carolina’s Post and Courier reports on state records showing that Amazon’s Createspace is eliminating 58 jobs in North Charleston, starting in March. An Amazon spokesperson confirms, “After a thorough review of our service offerings, we’ve made the decision to discontinue Createspace’s paid professional editing, design and marketing services. We will work closely with impacted employees through this transition to help them find new roles within the company or assist them with pursuing opportunities outside the company.” The service division will close in July. The newspaper says the layoffs are mostly customer service positions. The change has no effect on Createspace’s […]

She “has concluded that a bigger footprint is necessary for the companies to thrive,” the article says, as “three individuals with knowledge of the companies said that Redstone is actively moving in that direction [of a merger.]” Those insiders say that CBS chairman Les Moonves “is now open to the possibility,” and an individual close to Moonves told TheWrap: “He’s having active discussions with […]
