Judge Dismisses Copyright Infringement Lawsuit Against Emma Cline
A California Federal court dismissed competing lawsuits by THE GIRLS author Emma Cline filed last November against her ex-boyfriend, Chaz Reetz-Laiolo, and his suit against her and Random House alleging copyright infringement. However, in granting and denying a flurry of motions to dismiss by both sides, Judge William Orrick left it open for amended infringement suits to be revived at a later date. Orrick’s 60-page order, issued June 28, dismissed a number of Chaz Reetz-Laiolo’s claims with prejudice, characterizing the litigation as “grist for its own novel” with allegations of sexual assault, plagiarism, keylogging, and infringement. Awards After the postponement of the 2018 Nobel prize for literature in May, 100 Swedish writers, actors, journalists and other cultural figures have formed an organization called the New Academy, which will award its own prize this fall. A statement on their website says, “We have founded The New Academy to remind people that literature and culture at large should promote democracy, transparency, empathy and respect, without privilege, bias arrogance or sexism.” The academy has asked Sweden’s librarians to nominate authors from anywhere in the world, with the stipulation that they have written at least two books, one of which was published […]

Diaz Denies Misconduct Allegations: “It Didn’t Happen.”
In a new interview with the Boston Globe, Junot Diaz denied allegations of sexual misconduct raised in May by Zinzi Clemmons. Clemmons said Diaz forcibly kissed her after a Columbia University workshop, but Diaz countered the allegation, saying, “I did not kiss anyone. I did not forcibly kiss Zinzi Clemmons.
