Library and information association CILIP, the organization responsible for the UK’s Carnegie and Kate Greenaway Medals, is making changes to the prize after an independent diversity review. The organization called for a review after the 2017 Carnegie longlist did not include any titles by POC authors. Changes include opening up nominations to external bodies, diversity training for judges, and the additional of a children’s choice award, among other changes. Additionally, they have updated their mission statement: “to empower the next generation to create a better world through books and reading.” CILIP chief executive Nick Poole said, “As a sector, we have learnt that we need to be proactive in identifying and tearing down the barriers which prevent some people from discovering the joy of reading, of cultural participation and of seeing themselves reflected in literature.”
