Curiosity Quills Press, Behind on Royalties on Falling Sales, Gives Authors Option to Terminate

Curiosity Quills Press co-owner Eugene Teplitsky has confirmed to PL that the publisher is behind on authors’ royalty payments and temporarily shutting down print operations with the exception of middle grade novels, citing “month after month” of dwindling sales as the cause. All authors now have the option to terminate their contracts, “no strings attached” (including the waiving of their contractual “termination fees”), Teplitsky wrote in an email. Authors who wish to terminate should “simply email us at editor@curiosityquills.com and we will revert rights to all who ask for it, no questions asked,” he wrote. Briefs: BN Book Club Expands, Costa Awards, and More

Picks Barnes & Noble has named Marie Benedict’s The Only Woman in the Room as the January selection for the chain’s Book Club. Quarterly-ish until now (the last selection was Hank Green’s An Absolutely Remarkable Thing in September), the company said the club will now convene monthly “at all store nationwide,” which they say is “due to its overwhelming popularity with customers.” Awards The Costa Award category winners were announced, going to: The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle, Stuart Turton (First Novel); Normal People, Sally Rooney (Novel); The Cut Out Girl, Bart van Es (Biography); Assurances, J.O. Lindsey Rose will join Dutton as executive editor, acquiring commercial fiction including thrillers and suspense, starting January 22. Most recently she was senior editor at Grand Central. At Crown, Meghan Houser has been promoted to editor; Rose Fox to associate editor; and Jon Darga and Jillian Buckley to assistant editor. Donna Loffredo has been promoted to senior editor for Harmony Books and Rodale Books, and Michele Eniclerico moves up to associate editor for the two lines. In the Crown rights department, Rachel Berkowitz becomes deputy director of foreign rights and Claire Posner moves up to associate manager, subsidiary rights. Print Sales Near 700 Million Units for 2018

NPD Bookscan issued statistics for the final sales week of 2018 as well as the entire year. As we observed a week ago, once again booksellers and publishers held their breath for the final days of pre-Christmas sales, which look to have lifted the season above the previous year’s performance. Michelle Obama’s BECOMING pulled the market, selling approximately 712,000 tracked copies in the last full pre-Christmas week, and adding another 243,000 copies in the final sales week of the year (which included December 23 and 24), registering total hardcover sales of 3.428 million copies. Melanie Madden has joined Diversion Books as editor, acquiring narrative nonfiction. She was previously acquiring and development editor at The Quarto Group. Emily Canders has been promoted to publicity manager at Dutton. In the Netherlands, Melle van Loenen will join Nieuw Amsterdam as commissioning editor in the nonfiction department starting February 1. Most recently he worked as an editor at Cossee Publishers. Longtime USA Today books editor Jocelyn McClurg announced on Twitter that she has left the newspaper. The new books contact is Sarah Day Owen, who joined the company in September as interim lifestyle editor.
