Margot Herrera, senior editor at Workman Publishing, will transition to freelance as of July 2, after almost 27 years with the company. Harper Germany is launching a children’s publishing program, expanding its existing YA list, and adding middle grade and picture books. Carina Mathern will join the company as executive editor for children’s books/YA, starting August 1. She is currently editorial director at Friedrich Oetinger. Simon & Schuster Improves Library eBook Terms, Adds Selected Pay-Per-Checkout Titles
As the big publishers move to relatively similar terms for providing ebooks to public libraries, Simon & Schuster announced a revision of their terms that libraries should see as at least incremental improvement. Effective August 1, S&S will expand their usage term from one year to two years — in alignment with other big publisher terms. Digital audiobooks, which had been sold for perpetual access, will move to the same two year, one-user-per-copy usage model, however. Quad Asks for Expedited Antitrust Trial to Avoid Breakup Fee
Quad Graphics is concerned that the timing of the Department of Justice’s lawsuit to block their planned merger with LSC Communications will actually kill the deal before it gets to trial. That’s because either Quad or LSC can terminate the merger plan if it does not close by October 31 — and Quad is obligated to pay LSC a $45 million breakup if that happens.
