National Book Award Finalists Announced

The National Book Awards announced its 2019 shortlists, with the winners to be named on November 20. The fiction list includes titles from Pulitzer finalists Susan Choi and Laila Lalami and Booker winner Marlon James, while the Young People’s Literature list includes previous finalists Jason Reynolds and Laura Ruby. Four out of five fiction titles are published by Penguin Random House. International: Companhia das Letras Acquires Zahar, Sourcebooks Expands

Companhia das Letras in Brazil announced last week that they took 100 percent control of  Zahar, based in Rio de Janeiro and focused on books devoted to the human and social sciences. Luiz Schwarcz says in the announcement that founder Jorge Zahar “was a master when it came to publishing books that would stay the course…. Wendy Lamb will step down from her role as vice president and publishing director of Wendy Lamb Books at the end of the year and become a freelance editor and creative consultant. The imprint will continue, with associate editor Dana Carey acquiring, in consultation with Melanie Nolan, vp and publisher of Knopf Children’s. Lamb will continue to edit her marquee authors. William Morris Endeavor’s head of worldwide literary, lectures, and conference divisions Jennifer Rudolph Walsh is moving into a new role at the company, focusing on the live events business she built at the agency. Walsh does so as the annual TogetherLive event she co-founded with Glennon Doyle readies its annual tour, this year to 10 cities.
