Briefs: Forthcoming Books, Postponed Pulitzers

April 8, 2020
By Erin Somers

Forthcoming
Paolo Giordano‘s HOW CONTAGION WORKS will be published in the US on April 14, as an ebook from Bloomsbury and in audio from Penguin Random House Audio. An essay on the coronavirus pandemic that explains how disease spreads and how our interconnectedness will save us is reported to have been shared over 4 million times in Italy, with publication planned in 25 countries around the world. (Rights originate from MalaTesta Literary Agency in Milan.)

In the UK, Nosy Crow posted a free digital book on Monday, CORONAVIRUS: A Book for Children, including artwork by illustrator of The Gruffalo Axel Scheffler. Within the first 24 hours, the book was accessed over 100,000 times from the publisher’s website, and more from other hosts. They have given the book to their partner publishers in the USA, Australia and New Zealand, who will publish their own localized free versions. And they have arranged for further free digital publication in 14 languages: Afrikaans, Croatian, Dutch, French, German, Greek, Hungarian, Italian, Russian, Slovenian, Swedish, Turkish, Ukrainian, and Welsh.

Pulitzer Prize-winning Washington Post reporter Mary Jordan‘s THE ART OF HER DEAL, an unauthorized biography of Melania Trump, will be published by Simon & Schuster on June 16. Jordan began working on the book in 2015.

Candlewick Press and Walker Books will publish a sequel to Sam McBratney and illustrator Anita Jeram‘s classic picture book Guess How Much I Love You on September 29: WILL YOU BE MY FRIEND?

Awards
The Pulitzer Prize board has postponed the announcement of its 2020 winners from April 20 to May 4. Prize administrator Dana Canedy said in the release, “The Pulitzer board includes many high-level journalists who are on the frontlines of informing the public on the quickly evolving Coronavirus pandemic. As they focus on this critical mission, this postponement will provide additional time to thoroughly evaluate the 2020 Pulitzer finalists.” As in the past, they will livestream the presentation at 3 pm, via Pulitzer.org.

The Hugo Awards name finalists in 19 categories. Voting will open later this month and details of the awards announcement are to be announced.
