Corporate: Quad Sales Drop 14.4 Percent in the First Quarter; Lagardere Shareholders Reject Dissident Board Nominees

Quad reported earnings for the first quarter ended March 31, 2020, with net sales from continuing operations — which excludes the book printing business that has been up for sale for over six months — of $822.5 million, down from $961 million last year, or 14.4 percent. The declines largely reflect “ongoing print industry volume and pricing pressures, including the initial impact from COVID-19 pandemic.” Adjusted EBITDA for the quarter was $75.4 million, down from $78.4 million. The Pulitzer Prizes were announced Monday afternoon, with Colson Whitehead’s The Nickel Boys winning the fiction prize. Whitehead becomes the fourth author to win the prize twice, along with Booth Tarkington, William Faulkner, and John Updike. Joerg Pfuhl is stepping down as ceo of Holtzbrinck in Germany at the end of June. “After four intensive years, I would like to look for another challenge again and thank all of my colleagues for the good cooperation,” he said in a press release. Managing director for sales, marketing and digital Alexander Lorbeer, who joined Holtzbrinck in September 2018, will take over from Pfuhl.
