Author Rudolfo Anaya, 82, who helped launch the 1970s Chicano Literature Movement, died Sunday from a long illness. Publisher of his novel BLESS ME, ULTIMA since 1994 Grand Central said in a statement, “We will miss his passionate commitment to his local community and community of writers, his humility, and his sense of humor.”

Bestselling author Ibram X. Kendi was awarded Boston University’s Andrew W. Mellon Professorship in the Humanities. One of the university’s highest honors, the only other person to hold the position was Elie Wiesel.

In the UK, WH Smith is in redundancy consultations over firing 150 members of their head office staff in London and Swindon, the Bookseller has confirmed. “It has been an incredibly difficult decision for the business and we will be supporting all our colleagues through this,” a spokesperson said.

Following Simon & Schuster’s announcement on Wednesday about opening week sales for John Bolton‘s THE ROOM WHERE IT HAPPENED (which included consumer orders not yet fulfilled while reprints are delivered), NPD Bookscan tracked sales of approximately 221,000 hardcovers through June 27.
