People, Etc.

September 15, 2020
By Erin Somers

At St. Martin’s Publishing Group, Monique Patterson has been promoted to the new position of vp, editorial director, acquisition outreach,  reporting to Jen Enderlin. In addition to acquiring, Patterson “will now oversee initiatives to aid St. Martin’s Publishing Group in our commitment to increasing the diversity of our list, and in publishing more authors from underrepresented communities.”

Cecilia Lyra has been promoted to associate agent at The Rights Factory.

Gabrielle Bellot has been promoted to head instructor of classes and staff contributing editor for the magazine at Catapult.

The 2020 Rona Jaffe Award winners are: Hannah Bae (nonfiction), Mari Christmas (fiction), Yalitza Ferreras (fiction), Temim Fruchter (fiction), Elisa Gonzalez (poetry), and Charleen McClure (poetry).

Forthcoming?
As Penguin Random House imprints continue to push out publication dates for some fall releases (most recently detected for Ace Atkins, Milo Beckman, Daniel Bolger, Bella Ellis, Josh Malerman, Syed Masood, and Julia Sweig), the report that at least some printing capacity is being freed up for former president Barack Obama‘s long-awaited book gets a boost from Page Six. Their sources say Crown will announce a pub date on Thursday, for either November 10 or November 17.

More definitively, Andrews McMeel announced that they will publish Rupi Kaur‘s third collection of poetry and illustrations, home body, on November 17. (Simon & Schuster distributes AMP in the US, and as with Kaur’s previous book S&S will publish in Canada and the UK.)

Bookselling
Earlier this month, independent bookstore Diesel launched a crowdfunding campaign: “We have tried to weather this storm, with creative reinvention, hard work, and perseverance, as we always have. We’ve managed to keep our booksellers afloat financially and with the necessary health care.  But at this point, our stores are foundering…. We have resisted this appeal to our wider community but now we are running out of time.  It is either this, or ending our run as a quality independent bookstore.” They have raised close to $100,000 so far, towards a goal of $400,000.
