September Picks

September 1, 2020
By Erin Somers

Reese Witherspoon‘s Hello Sunshine Book Club pick for September is The Last Story of Mina Lee by Nancy Jooyoun Kim. You can read an excerpt now in our Buzz Books 2020 Fall/Winter sampler.

Jenna Bush Hager’s Today Show Read With Jenna book club chose Yaa Gyasi’s Transcendent Kingdom.

The Silver Arrow by Lev Grossman makes for an unusual Pennie’s Pick at Costco.

But Asha Lemmie‘s debut novel Fifty Words for Rain is the most popular pick so far: It’s the GMA selection, Amazon’s Spotlight Pick, and Barnes & Noble’s Discover book for the month.

Besides the Lemmie novel, Amazon‘s featured debut for the month is Brittany K. Barnett’s A Knock at Midnight. Also on their best books of the month list is Ken Follett’s The Evening and the Morning, available to sample now in our Buzz Books 2020 Fall/Winter.

All The Devils Are Here, by Louise Penny
Transcendent Kingdom, by Yaa Gyasi
Anxious People, by Fredrik Backman
The Book of Two Ways, by Jodi Picoult
The Quiet Americans, by Scott Anderson
Good Morning Monster, by Catherine Gildiner
Can’t Even, by Anne Helen Peterson
The Lying Life of Adults, by Elena Ferrante
Just Us, by Claudia Rankine

Barnes & Noble‘s selections — recently changed from Our Books of the Month to the less proprietary Our Monthly Picks — for September  are:

Fiction: Red at the Bone, by Jacqueline Woodson
Nonfiction: In the Country of Women, by Susan Straight
Mystery/Thriller: Heaven, My Home, by Attica Locke
YA: Sadie, by Courtney Summers
Children’s: Remarkables, by Margaret Peterson Haddix
