Briefs

December 23, 2020
By Michael Cader

Elizabeth A. Harris has been named a new publishing reporter at the New York Times, and will move over from culture to books. Harris joined the NYT in 2009.

Book of the Month readers picked Brit Bennett‘s THE VANISHING HALF as their Book of the Year. The book was also the No. 1 checkout at the New York Public Library this year.

The Book Industry Study Group (BISG) has published the 2020 update to the BISAC book publishing subject codes. This year’s update added 155 codes and modified 123 literals. As executive director Brian O’Leary notes, “The BISAC Subject Codes are all about categorizing books to promote discovery and purchase. The annual updates are a reflection of society, not a driver of it.”

We will move to our as-needed holiday schedule from here. For PublishersMarketplace.com members we’ll be back some time next week with a catch-up issue of the newsletter — and as always, our team will be clipping news to the Automat, posting deals, accepting job listings and more. (And our “promo code” 15gift , giving new members a chance to try to the site for just $15 for the first month, works until December 27: just put the code in the indicated “Promo Code: ___” field when you register.
