Greenlight Bookstore Employees Unionize
Thirty-nine employees at three Greenlight Bookstore locations in Brooklyn have voted to unionize, joining the Retail, Wholesale, and Department Store Union – the same union joined by employees at McNally Jackson and Book Culture. According to the filing with the National Labor Relations Board, eligible employees include “all Full Time and Regular Part Time Booksellers, Shift Leaders, Sales Associates, Lead Sales Associates, Events Coordinators, Marketing Coordinators, Marketing and Design Assistants, Receivers, Direct to Home Employees, E-Commerce Employees, Staff Picks Liaison Employees, Buying Assistants, and Buyers.” Store managers, temporary employees, and supervisors are excluded. Woodward and Costa’s Book Called, “Peril”
The book from Bob Woodward and Robert Costa that Simon & Schuster will publish September 21 is titled, PERIL. The publisher says Woodward and Costa interviewed more than 200 people “at the center of the turmoil” during the transition from the Trump administration to President Biden, calling it “one of the most dangerous periods in American history. HBG to Acquire Workman For $240 Million
Hachette Book Group and Workman Publishing officially announced Monday “a binding commitment” for HBG to acquire Workman (as we had hinted recently). The transaction is expected to close after the standard 35-day regulatory review period. Workman comprises six imprints: Workman, Algonquin, Algonquin Young Readers, Artisan, Storey Publishing, and Timber Press, and has a small group of distribution clients. HBG will pay $240 million, a 1.8 multiple over Workman’s sales of $134 million in 2020 — when they were up 12 percent over 2019, so about $120 million the year before. Initiatives: Tobias Literary Agency to Include Screenwriters
The Tobias Literary Agency will expand to include screenwriters under the header of Tobias Literary Management. Theatre producer and manager Eric C. Jones will head up the new endeavor, which will represent “traditionally disenfranchised voices,” along with J.R. Ficarra, who previously worked at equity firm Hill Path Capitol and production company Matador Content. “In order to tip the scales of widespread discrimination in the industry we have to support and lift up works that promote diversity and equity by writers from all marginalized communities,” Jones said.
