HarperCollins Union Votes to Authorize a Strike
The HarperCollins Union announced that their over 250 members have voted by 99 percent to authorize a strike if the publisher “does not agree to a fair contract.” The union is asking for “higher pay, improved family leave benefits, a greater commitment to diversifying staff, and stronger union protection.” The union also charges that “many employees cite pressure to work extra hours without additional compensation.” Harper was the last of the big five publishers to raise minimum salaries to $45,000 last year, in an agreement with the union. Macmillan US Accepting, Not Processing Orders As Systems Continue to Return
Macmillan released another statement on Friday updating their work to restore their systems after last weekend’s “security incident, which involves the encryption of certain files on our network.” The Pan Macmillan UK warehouse “resumed operations” on June 28. In the US, “we are accepting orders electronically, but are unable to process them at this time.” As we reported yesterday, email and Google apps functionality is being restored to US employees on a rolling basis — which, as some employees underscored in online posts, means that not everyone has been reconnected yet, in case you have been waiting to hear from […]
