Pen America, PRH Sue FL County Over Book Bans
Pen America, Penguin Random House, and a group of authors and local parents have filed a federal lawsuit against the Escambia County, FL school district. According to a release, this is “a first-of-its-kind challenge to unlawful censorship” as it brings parents, authors, and a publisher together to fight escalating book bans. The lawsuit argues that the county’s removal and restriction of books–the majority of which focus on “race, racism, and LGBTQ identities” and are by BIPOC and/or LGBTQ authors–from school libraries violates the First Amendment and the Equal Protection Clause of the Constitution. Hamessley Posts Statement About Departure From New Leaf
Further to Tuesday’s report about agent Jordan Hamessley’s abrupt departure from New Leaf Literary & Media, Hamessley posted a long statement online, writing that it was not amicable. Subsequent to Hamessley’s departure, 27 of her 45 clients were let go from the agency, while 18 were offered new agents. Bookselling: More Barnes & Noble Store Changes
In New York, Barnes & Noble will open their 8,000-square-foot Upper East Side bookstore at Third Avenue and 87th Street on July 12, and a 9,000-square-foot store in the Bridgehampton Commons is expected to open in October. A BN in Lewisville, TX will close on May 21, where it has operated for 28 years, after the landlord declined to renew the lease.
