Bookforum, the quarterly publication of book reviews that shut down last December, will relaunch in August under the umbrella of The Nation magazine. The Nation acquired its archives and intellectual property in June and plans to revive it, with editorial operations remaining separate, and the editorial staff that was in place at the time of closure, led by editor in chief Michael Miller. Hurowitz and Abu Dhabi-Based Mubadala Are Bidding for Simon & Schuster
Investor and author Richard Hurowitz in partnership with the sovereign wealth fund Mubadala are among the second-round bidders for Simon & Schuster. Mubadala manages investments for the government of Abu Dhabi. Other bidders include private equity firm KKR and Harper Collins. The news was reported by the WSJ. A writer, investor and publisher of the quarterly magazine The Octavian Report, Hurowitz has been a bidder for other trade publishing companies in the past. April Sales Decline After Pandemic Boom
The AAP released data for April from participating StatShot publishers, reporting trade sales of $555.6 million, down 11.7 percent from $629.1 million in April 2022. The downturn marks a shift closer to pre-pandemic numbers, and sales are still up from April 2020’s total of $514.5 million. Adult sales fell 12.8 percent to $382.4 million. Hardcover sales were down 11.1 percent to $126.7 million, while paperbacks fell 20.2 percent to $120.4 million. E-books fell as well, with sales of $58.2 million, down from $70.2 million.
