Novelist, essayist and playwright Edmund White, 85, died on June 3 “while waiting for an ambulance after experiencing symptoms of a stomach illness.” White was a pioneering chronicler of gay life, and the author of more than 30 books including Forgetting Elena, A Boy’s Own Story, The Married Man, and many more.

Center for Fiction Union Wins Voluntary Recognition

The Center for Fiction has recognized its workers’ union after a supermajority of eligible employees filed for election with the RWDSU. The union will cover approximately 25 positions, including booksellers, baristas, administrative assistants, event production coordinators, development and grants assistants, and more. According to a release, they are “seeking to resolve a range of workplace issues, but are focused on having a seat at the table and a voice in decision-making, scheduling, job descriptions, and policy at The Center.” The union will now begin bargaining with management over a contract.
