US Book Show Sessions on AI, Growth
At the US Book Show ceo panel, Publishers Weekly editorial director Jonathan Segura asked executives how they are wrestling with the problem of detecting AI-generated content in manuscripts. HBG ceo Shelley didn’t reference the cancelled SHY GIRL or have a specific answer, saying that the company doesn’t have a systemic way of checking for AI authorship. He said that AI-detection programs are largely imperfect and that authors have concerns about having their work fed into such tool. Lakeside Book Company will sell and distribute Red Racer Books in the US and Canada starting July 1 and Calla Press Publishing starting September 1. They will also print, sell, and distribute in the US and Canada Voices of Tomorrow Press starting this month and WarGate Books starting September 1. Longleaf Services will sell and distribute: Washington State University Press; The Pennsylvania State University Press; and Hong Kong University Press in the US starting in 2027.
Literary Arts Fund Names First Recipients of $7.7 Million In Grants
The Literary Arts Fund announced the first 40 literary arts organizations and publishers to receive $7.7 million in unrestricted general operating grants. The recipients “organize local book festivals, present readings and conversations with authors, host writing workshops, offer writers’ retreats and residencies, and are responsible for a vast amount of poetry and works in translation published each year.” Over half of the recipients have annual budgets of under $1 million. Dark Horse Voluntarily Recognizes Union
Dark Horse Comics has voluntarily recognized the workers’ union with the National Labor Relations Board. In a statement, interim ceo Jay Komas noted that, “Voluntary recognition is an unusual step for employers, but in doing so Dark Horse intends to reaffirm its commitment that this new leadership wants to do things differently and enter into good-faith bargaining.” “I understand the employees’ disappointment with how issues have historically been addressed.
