People, Etc.: Rizzo, NBA Honors, FT Shortlist, Sam Herman and More

September 16, 2010By Michael Cader

Little, Brown executive director of publicity Heather Rizzo will leave the company on December 1 to become publicity and marketing director for the house’s author Michael Connelly. The publisher is searching for a new publicity director.

At Harper UK, David Roth-Ey has been promoted to group digital director and  publisher, overseeing digital strategy and all digital initiatives.

At the National Book Awards ceremony on November 17, the National Book Foundation will give Tom Wolfe their “lifetime achievement” award for distinguished contribution to American letters and Sesame Workshop co-founder Joan Ganz Cooney will get their award for service to the literary community. Andy Borowitz will emcee the ceremonies.

The shortlist for the sixth annual Financial Times and Goldman Sachs Business Book award. (Rajan’s is the one title not from a big publisher–it was issued by Princeton University Press.):

The Art of Choosing, Sheena Iyengar
The Facebook Effect, David Kirkpatrick
The Big Short, Michael Lewis
More Money than God: Hedge Funds and the Making of a New Elite, Sebastian Mallaby
Fault Lines: How Hidden Fractures Still Threaten the World Economy, Raghuram Rajan
Too Big to Fail, Andrew Ross Sorkin

Cambridge’s Woodhead Publishing is setting up a US office in Philadelphia to oversee sales, marketing and distribution of their books on science and technology. Ingram Publisher Services will be their distributor, and the Philadelphia office is working with Caslon Business Development. Woodhead had partnered with CRC for the past ten years.

I was saddened to read in Shelf Awareness that mid-Atlantic sales rep for 45 years Sam Herman died Tuesday. I met Sam (and his wife Adele, also a sales rep) when I worked at Workman Publishing in the mid-80s and had my first “sample sales calls” with Sam. (It’s an eye-opening experience that anyone in publishing should have.) His warmth, grace, detailed knowledge and earnest devotion to each call are attributes I’ve associated with all reps ever since. Sam (and Adele) was one of those reps you always looked forward to seeing at sales conferences and convention, and for an editor, Sam was one of those people you would depend on for a smart, realistic answer if you had a question about a book you were working on.

Shelf says Adele Herman and her family are receiving visitors tonight 105 Magnolia Place, North Wales, PA, and a celebration of Sam’s life will be announced later (after the high holidays).
