Author Vince Flynn said in a note on his website that he is battling prostate cancer, after being diagnosed in November: “At the end of my last tour, I was diagnosed with Stage III metastatic prostate cancer. Just a few years ago, this diagnosis would have been a death sentence. Today, specialists are making great strides in the areas of hormone therapy and immune response, and there are several very promising drug trials that are changing the landscape of how prostate cancer is treated. My treatments are working very well, and my near term prognosis is extremely good. In other words, I have more than a few Rapp novels left in me.” The next of those, written with Brian Haig, “should be out in October of 2011.”

Relativity Media will market and distribute Smokewood Entertainment’s movie version of Judy Moody and the NOT Bummer Summer in the US this summer, based on Megan McDonald’s nine-book children’s series. McDonald co-wrote the script, too, and her published Candlewick will issue “a novel inspired by” the script on May 24.
Apple alum Mike Matas has launched Push Pop Press, a digital book maker for iPhone and iPad that will allow users to “explore photos, videos, music, maps, and interactive graphics, all through a new physics-based multi-touch user interface.”

The NYT’s long-hyped and wholly separate e-book bestseller list, developed in conjunction with RoyaltyShare, will debut tomorrow. CEO Bob Kohn tells Publishing Trends it can validate data the Times receives by comparing “against sales data those same vendors send to book publishers in the course of their regular reporting.”
