Wendy Pallot will join Bloomsbury as group finance director on April 8, taking over from Colin Adams. Pallot is currently chairman and one of the co-founding partners of a company operating a number of local radio stations.

Betty Woodmancy has joined Howard Books as vp, associate publisher. A publishing veteran of over 20 years, she has worked for Integrity, B&H, Ingram, Thomas Nelson, and Sam’s Club and Walmart. Sally Brock has joined the company as a publicist; she was at Regnery.

Sarah Landis will join Harper Children’s Books on February 28 as a senior editor, working primarily on teen fiction and reporting to Farrin Jacobs. Landis has been at Hyperion/Voice.

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln has scored a $781,900 grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation on behalf of the University of Nebraska Press, the University of Oklahoma Press and the University of Texas Press. The money will “aid in the publication of 27 books – nine from each press – in an initiative titled Recovering Languages and Literacies in the Americas.”

Former owner of Just Books in Greenwich, CT Warren Cassell, 80, died over the weekend, according to Shelf Awareness. He and his wife had retired to Portland, OR.

Max Wilk, playwright, film and television writer, and author of 19 books, including Don’t Raise the Bridge, Lower the Water (the basis of a Jerry Lewis movie) and the Yellow Submarine novelization, died earlier in February at home in Westport, CT. He was 90.

Brazilian author Moacyr Scliar, who received international recognition for novels and short stories such as “The Centaur in the Garden,” ”Max and the Cats” and “The Gods of Raquel”, died of multiple organ failure over the weekend. He was 73.
