People, Etc.

February 8, 2012By Sarah Weinman

Julia Haav will join Yale University Press as publicist later this month. She was most recently a publicist at Europa Editions.

Publishing veteran Bridget Marmion is launching a marketing consulting firm, Your Expert Nation. She has developed a national network of experts in “virtually every genre and service,” including such industry professionals as John Tewsley, Laura Chittenden, Victoria Meyer, Charlotte Abbott, Lee Stern, Greg Mowery,  Jennifer Northcutt,  Susan Aikens,  Nancy Quinn, Jack Covert, social media consultant Susan Halligan, Sean Concannon and Sonnet Media, and mommy blogger and author Paula Balzer. She will work with strategic partner Rich Kelley (with expertise in SEO, content development and social media) and the community of experts to prepare focused marketing campaigns. Special service offerings aim to help authors “keep in touch with their fans as they finish the new book” and get started with social media.

New York Magazine has named Kathryn Schulz its newest book critic, filling a position vacated by Sam Anderson more than a year ago, when he joined the New York Times Magazine. Schulz is the author of BEING WRONG: Adventures in the Margin of Error (Ecco) and won the NBCC’s Nona Balakian Award last month.

Perseus’s Argo Navis Author Services group is growing with Jennifer Dedman moving over to client services and marketing manager and Scott Horst moving to the group as a digital content project editor. Kera Yonker also joins the unit as a client services and marketing manager.

The unit has announced agreements with the Carol Mann Agency, Joelle Delbourgo Associates, Cynthia Cannell Literary Agency, The Hartnett Agency, Paul Bresnick Literary Agency, and Pinder Lane & Garon-Brooke Associates to the make their services available to their authors. Though not included in today’s release, Argo Navis also has a deal with Writers House, to be announced officially soon, expected to contribute a significant volume of authors to the service.

Kevin Mulroy has been hired a publisher of Quayside’s Fair Winds Press and Quiver Books, starting February 13. The position has been vacant since Will Kiester left company in early January. Mulroy, who has been at Potomac Global Media after working at the National Geographic Society, will relocate to Beverly, MA.

Publishing Technology has hired Kevin Haskins as senior business development executive. He will work from the company’s offices in Somerset, NJ and Cambridge, MA.

Barnes & Noble announced its slate of 15 Discover Great New Writers selections for Spring 2012.
