Ann Hulbert will join the Atlantic as books & culture editor in June, the Observer reports, as part of an attempt “to beef up their culture coverage and help expand and re-envision their online book coverage.” Hulbert was previously an editor at Slate and the New Republic and is currently a Spencer Fellow at Columbia Journalism School.
George Saunders has won the PEN/Malamud Award, which recognizes a “body of work that demonstrates excellence in the art of short fiction.”
Desmond Tutu has won the Templeton Prize, cited for “his life-long work in advancing spiritual principles such as love and forgiveness which has helped to liberate people around the world.” Tutu will be awarded the $1.7 million prize at a ceremony in London on May 21.
Novelist and screenwriter for Merchant-Ivory Films Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, 85, died April 3 in New York from complications of a pulmonary disorder. Aside from the 23 screenplays she wrote for filmmakers Ismail Merchant and James Ivory, winning Academy Awards for A Room With a View (1985) and Howards End (1992), Jhabvala published eight novels and twelve short story collections, winning the Booker Prize in 1975 for HEAT AND DUST. Jhabvala’s most recent story was published in the New Yorker in its March 25 issue.
