People: Carl Brandt Dies, and More

August 14, 2013By Michael Cader

Literary agent Carl D. Brandt, 78, died on Tuesday. He joined Brandt & Brandt, the firm founded by his father, in 1957 and worked there ever since, eventually running the agency. Brandt had been working from home in recent months for the agency, now called Brandt & Hochman. The agency notes: “He will be remembered as a gentleman in a gentleman’s business; a champion of serious nonfiction writers; an astute reader and advisor; a warm and beloved colleague.”

Executive Editor for Harlequin Love Inspired Joan Marlow Golan is retiring on Friday. She joined the company in 1997 as a senior editor with Silhouette Romance.

At Basic Books, Katy O’Donnell has been promoted to associate editor, and Nicole Caputo moves up to vp and creative director.

Alan Rapp has joined The Monacelli Press as senior editor, architecture and design. He was formerly senior editor, art and design at Chronicle. Former Norton editor Nancy Green is serving as consulting editor, architecture; Michael Vagnetti has been named production manager (he was at Sterling); Kimberly Sheu has been hired as marketing associate (she was at Macmillan Speakers Bureau).

Erica Sanders-Foege, formerly of Woodside Creative and Taunton Press, has been named senior editor at Oxmoor House, acquiring lifestyle books.

For the record, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt formally reported their second quarter results Thursday morning. But they match the results that we extracted on August 5 from their pre-IPO SEC filing — which had reported on their performance for the first half of 2013, in advance of the actual quarterly report.
