People, Etc.

September 3, 2013By Michael Cader

Donald Winchester will join Watson, Little as a literary agent on October 1. Previously he was an agent at AP Watt, and his client list will move with him.

Liz Egan notes on Twitter that she starts this week as books editor at Glamour Magazine. She was an editor at Amazon Publishing.

Chairman of Constable & Robinson in the UK Nick Robinson, 58, died following a long illness. He started Robinson Publishing in 1983, and merged the company with Constable in 1999. There is a Facebook memorial page here.

Hachette Book Group senior sales rep Conan Gorenstein, 64, died suddenly on September 1 at his home in Troy, NY. He worked in field sales for the company since 1991. “In his 22 years of service, Conan was a passionate sales rep, always interested in doing the best for HBG and his accounts.”

Science fiction author Frederik Pohl, 93, died over the weekend, the news first shared by his granddaughter (and author) Emily Pohl-Weary on Twitter. His career, which spanned seventy-five years, included the novels GETAWAY (1977) and most recently ALL THE LIVES HE LED (2011), JEM (1979) as well as poetry, essay collections, and a biography, THE WAY THE FUTURE WAS (1978).

The Hugo Award winners were named, with John Scalzi receiving honors for best novel for REDSHIRTS.

The WSJ highlights James Patterson‘s charitable efforts to help get kids passionate about reading. His recent financial contributions include $1.5 million in scholarships to students studying to become teachers, and a planned $1 million in support for independent bookstores: “He wants to aid viable bookstores that have a kids section, but may need a bit of a boost.”
