Obituaries
The French editor who first published in translation Alexander Solzhenitsyn and an early publisher of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Claude Durand, 76, has died. Durand ran Fayard until retiring from the company in 2009. He was the author of multiple books as well, including The Night Zoo, which won the Prix Medicis in 1979. CEO of Hachette Livre Arnaud Nourry commented: “A peerless discovered of talent, an indefatigable defender of authors, but also a man of legendary flair, Claude Durand will remain as one of the great figures of the French publishing of the past 40 years.”

Three time winner of the Caldecott Medal (and six-time medalist) Marcia Brown, 96, died at home in late April. “One of the country’s most lauded picture-book artists, Ms. Brown illustrated dozens of titles. For some, she also wrote the text; for many others, she retold well-loved folk and fairy tales, sometimes translating them from the original French.
