Hotchkiss and Associates is changing its name to Hotchkiss Daily & Associates, as Sean Daily is promoted. Founder Jody Hotchkiss comments: “I like to say that agenting is about ‘chopping the wood and hauling the water each day’—doing the work. Sean has certainly done the work since the day he started here, and he has also brought great insights while at the same time developing into an effective and respected agent.”
Matthew Barblan will join the Association of American Publishers as vice president, public policy on August 27. He was most recently the executive director of the Center for the Protection of Intellectual Property and assistant professor of law at George Mason University.
Sarah Cardillo has been promoted to director, publishing operations at Sourcebooks.
At Macmillan Children’s, Beth Clark has been promoted to creative director for Roaring Brook Press and Farrar, Straus Children’s, while Andrew Arnold has been promoted to art director for First Second Books. Jen Keenan has joined as art director for Farrar, Straus Children’s and Roaring Brook Press. Previously, she was associate art director at Little, Brown Children’s.
At Taaschen, Hans-Peter Kubler will join in the new role of chief operating officer on September 1. He had been managing director at German wholesaler Libri, and most recently has been working as a consultant.
Obituary
Longtime publishing executive Carie Freimuth died on Sunday after a long illness. Tina Constable at Crown Publishing Group wrote to colleagues, “We will always remember Carie as a dedicated, kind and well-regarded colleague. She brought passion and great care to our authors and to our publishing program and for that we are deeply grateful to her.” Most recently she was vp, associate publisher, WaterBrook, Multnomah, and Image Books until spring 2015. Freimuth held executive positions at Times Books, Random House, Crown, and HarperCollins. Dylan Farrow‘s debut YA novel HUSH is being auctioned this week, the NY Post reports. “The story is set in a futuristic world in which those in control of society use magic to manipulate the truth.” The book was developed in collaboration with Glasstown Entertainment, and is represented by Stephen Barbara at Inkwell Management.

Author of Crazy Rich Asians Kevin Kwan has been declared a wanted man by Singapore’s Ministry of Defense, accused of defaulting on his national service obligations. Originally reported by The Straits Times and picked up by the NYT, Kwan could face a modest fine and/or imprisonment of up to 3 years if convicted. (He did not attend the recent movie premiere in Singapore.) Kwan moved to Houston with his family when he was 11 and was required to serve for two years when he turned 18.
Separately, as N.K. Jemisin won a Hugo Award for the third year in a row, Quartz quotes from her acceptance speech: “This is the year in which I get to smile at all of those naysayers: every single mediocre, insecure wannabe who fixes their mouth to suggest that I do not belong on this stage, that people like me cannot possibly have earned such an honor, and that when they win it’s meritocracy, but when we win it’s identity politics. I get to smile at those people and lift a massive shining rocket-shaped finger in their direction.”
Appeal
The National Book Critics Circle is seeking donations: “For the first time in 47 years we are making an open appeal for help.” The campaign aims “to improve the organization’s website, bookcritics.org, to make it easier to champion the craft of book criticism and to communicate more effectively with our hundreds of members. We are also broadening our footprint with our emerging critics initiatives, meant to help foster the next generation of literary conversation.”
