Library eBooks
In the long-simmering battle between public libraries and publishers over terms for titles digital lending, 44 libraries comprising the Washington Digital Library Consortium are organizing a boycott of Blackstone Publishing’s digital audiobooks. As of July 1 the company introduced 90-day windowing on selected newly-published digital audiobooks for libraries — and those protesting libraries are responding by announcing a six-month boycott of all Blackstone digital audio releases from August 1 through January 31, 2020. The consortium’s analysis found that Blackstone comprises about 20 percent of their digital audio catalog — but they only comprised 2.7 percent of all digital checkouts over the past year (or 14,713 checkouts in all).
