Philip Ruppel Named CEO of Phaidon Press, Bob Miller Launches Bookswork Press

January 26, 2026By Erin Somers

Philip Ruppel has been named ceo of Phaidon Press and its affiliated companies, The Monacelli Press and Artspace, effective immediately. Ruppel has been coo of Phaidon since 2015. He succeeds Bob Miller, who is leaving the company to launch a “book and creative development company serving authors and publishers” called Bookswork Press.

Debra Black said on behalf of the Phaidon Board, “For more than a decade, Philip has been essential to the exciting growth of Phaidon, Monacelli, and Artspace. We are thrilled that he is stepping into this well-deserved leadership role and are confident he will guide the organization to even greater success.” She added, “We are grateful to Bob for his contribution to Phaidon and wish him the very best in his future endeavors.”

Ruppel said, “I am honored to be trusted to lead such a venerable publishing house as Phaidon. I look forward to collaborating with our authors, partners, and dedicated employees to publish the extraordinary books and limited editions for which Phaidon is known.”

Miller’s new company, Bookswork Press, has projects in the works with author Brad Meltzer, former Disney ceo Michael Eisner, and others. Miller said, “I’m really looking forward to working in depth with authors and publishers, doing what I love best, which is helping new ideas make their way into the world.”
