Over the past two weeks at least a dozen authors once represented by literary agent Brooks Sherman indicated online that they no longer work with him, some noting they exited that relationship a while ago. Some cited “ongoing communications issues” and other “business dealings,” while others made their declarations “vague” by intention or referred broadly to “the behavior detailed anonymously online.” Anonymous accusations were made on Query Tracker and through the YA Whispers Twitter account, alleging deficient representation in a variety of ways along with more serious charges. Winter Institute 2021 closed on Saturday morning with a keynote titled “What Now?!” from author and professor Brené Brown (previously slated to be Thursday’s opening keynote, but reschedule due to weather in Texas). Day two of Winter Institute kicked off with a keynote discussion among Lauren Groff, Viet Thanh Nguyen, Colson Whitehead, and moderator Michelle Malonzo titled Novelist as Citizen.
