When Canada’s dominant book chain Indigo made comprehensive changes to its co-op program last year, local publishers were not exactly happy. Now they are upset again over further co-op increases that went into effect on April 1, but are only beginning to register with some publishers. Patrick Nolan has been promoted to vp, editor-in-chief and associate publisher at Penguin Books, reporting to Kathryn Court. He fills the position being vacated by Stephen Morrison when he joins Picador. Nolan has spent the past 12 years as director of trade paperback sales, and in his new role Nolan will be responsible for overseeing the editorial direction and shape of the Penguin Books list. “Patrick has been a big part of Penguin’s success over the last decade, and I very much look forward to working with him in his new role,” Court said in a statement. Kathleen Calhoun Nettleton has been promoted to president and publisher of Pelican Publishing, effective immediately. New Pew Research Study Demonstrates eBook Consumers Buy More Books And Read More, Too
Pew Research’s latest e-reading survey, released yesterday, confirmed and added more context on various trends among those who read electronically. Of the nearly 3,000 adults surveyed between November and December 2011 (with two follow-up surveys in January and February 2012) a little more than one-fifth of American adults (or 21 percent) reported that they have read an e-book in the past year. That number, arrived at in February, increased from 17 percent as reported in December 2011, the spike attributed to holiday gift-giving.
