Little, Brown has world English rights to the first novel for adults by JK Rowling, the company announced Thursday morning. Little Brown UK publisher David Shelley will serve as Rowling’s editor and Michael Pietsch will oversee publication in the US. S&S Unveils New Royalty Statements, Coming Soon Online
Simon & Schuster is dispatching “substantially redesigned” and more compact royalty statements with this reporting period, and as of March 1 those statement will be viewable as PDFs on their online Agent Portal. The publisher has worked closely with many authors and agents in developing the resigned statements, including “close consultation” with the Association of Authors’ Representatives’ royalty committee. Tor will release THE MEMORY OF LIGHT, the final novel in the Wheel of Time series begun by Robert Jordan and completed by Brandon Sanderson, on January 8, 2013, calling the book “one of the most important titles Tor will ever publish.” As has been widely reported, Harper will publish Amanda Knox’s memoir in 2013, paying as much as $4 million following a multi-day auction involving as many as seven publishers. Tina Pohlman will join Open Road on March 5 as publisher, filling the position vacated by Brendan Cahill last year, though the job itself has expanded with company’s recent hiring of multiple editorial specialists. She’ll report to ceo Jane Friedman and is charged with “lead[ing] Open Road’s editorial services, expansion into new verticals, and acquisition of new titles.” Friedman says the company has published over 2,000 titles since April 2010, and under Pohlman and the expanded editorial staff they will add “a minimum of 1,000” more titles by the end of 2012. Mortenson Says He’s Protecting All Authors In Looking for Dismissal of Lawsuit; Plaintiffs Point to James Frey Case
Legal filings have been piling up in the case seeking class action status against Greg Mortenson, his co-author, publisher Penguin and the charity that Morteson established. The case for dismissal as argued by Mortenson’s attorneys does not address the substance of the allegations–that his story is fraudulent–but rather focuses on numerous issues of legal standing. They note that they plaintiffs have amended and refiled their claims five times now, continuing to look for different basis on which to sue.
