In a memo to staff on Tuesday afternoon, Norton announced that it is “permanently putting out of print” Blake Bailey’s Philip Roth: The Biography, as well as his memoir The Splendid Things We Planned. Norton president Julia Reidhead wrote, “Mr. Bailey will be free to seek publication elsewhere if he chooses.” By Wednesday the ebook version was withdrawn from sale. And Norton’s audiobook licensee Recorded Books tells PL, “We will follow Norton’s lead on this and remove the audio from sale as well.” Will Norton recall the existing print copies? E L James to Move Backlist to New Sourcebooks Imprint for Entrepreneurial Women
Author of the Fifty Shades Trilogy and other titles E L James will have her entire backlist distributed by Sourcebooks in print and ebooks starting April 1. James is the “keystone author” in a new imprint providing a “joint publishing model” to “entrepreneurial women authors who want to benefit from all that a top publisher has to offer, including powerful retail relationships and deep distribution channels.” The company says the role line will let “established entrepreneurial authors to take greater control in the creation, development and marketing of their books.” Pamela Jaffee will head publicity and marketing for the imprint.
