The Pulitzer Board Chose ‘James’ After Reaching Impasse On Three Finalists

The New York Times reports that Percival Everett’s novel James, which won the Pulitzer on Monday, was not among the jury’s top three picks, and was selected instead after the board had reached an impasse choosing among finalists. The finalists for the prize were Rita Bullwinkel’s Headshot, Stacey Levine’s Mice 1961, and Gayl Jones’s The Unicorn Woman. The Times writes, “In a typical year, one of the three finalists is chosen.
